Spell It!

02.25.13

Fancy yourself a gifted speller? Well, here’s your chance to test your spelling skills (publicly no less) and possibly raise $1,000 for your favorite charity.

My multi talented food writing friend Dave Lieberman of OC Weekly’s Stick A Fork In It  and I will be entering the $1,000 National Adult Spelling Bee Sunday at 4:30 p.m. in Long Beach. I hope to come home with $1,000 for Jack and Milly, the two students in Kenya that I’m helping put through college in Nairobi and Dave would like to hand over a check to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to support its efforts in finding a cure.

This will be my second go at this contest, and I won Spelling Bees in elementary school, so why not? And you can compete against me too.

The entry fee costs $25 or $30 at the door. As long as you’re at least 16-years-old, you’re in. The winner will receive $500, and your favorite nonprofit organization, school, or church will receive $500.

For entry form, words to study, etc. check online at Justin Rudd's National Adult Spelling Bee.

At Bay Shore Church at 5100 E. Toledo in Long Beach.  See you then!

Viva Oscar’s Fish Tacos!

02.25.13

The next time you’re in San Diego and craving Baja-style fish tacos, it will be worth your while to seek out Oscar’s Mexican Seafood. We haven’t found anything quite like it in Orange County, which is too bad for us. This hole in the wall is the place to go for the freshest Mexican style seafood, surf and turf tacos, ceviche, cucurachas (deep fried shrimp with shell on) and more. You’d swear you were at one of the great seaside stands in Ensenada. Oscar’s is in the sleepy town of Pacific Beach, just five seats, and takes cash only.

Plan on ordering at the counter and eating at a table outside. You’ll be in fish taco heaven. We recommend the generous sized fish or shrimp ceviche, spicy shrimp taco with cheese, cabbage, onion, tomato and cilantro, and the Torta de Oscar with smoked fish, spicy shrimp, skirt steak, cabbage, cheese, onion, tomato, cilantro and avocado. You can choose from three homemade salsas to add spice to your order, and wash it down with a cold Mexican soda or jarritos.

Happy hour specials Monday through Thursday from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. means you can order .99 cents tacos or a free fish taco with any order.

Open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday to Thursday; 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

703 Turquoise St. in San Diego.
